Benefits of Exercise

Exercise can help:

  • Improve energy levels and reduce fatigue

  • Ease anxiety and low mood

  • Improve strength, balance and mobility

  • Support sleep, appetite and recovery

  • Boost confidence and quality of life

Even small amounts of movement, tailored to your needs, can make a big difference.

Exercise Options

We provide a personalised approach, starting with an initial 1:1 assessment with a specialist oncology physiotherapist or cancer exercise specialist. Based on your goals, health status and any treatment-related effects, you’ll be guided to one of the following:

  • 1:1 Exercise Advice – Tailored support to help you start moving safely and confidently.

  • Level 1 Classes – Small, supportive classes designed for people new to exercise or with ongoing treatment effects.

  • Level 2 Classes – For those feeling stronger and looking to maintain or build fitness.

  • Referral to Research Trials – In collaboration with the University of Surrey.

Each class includes a short guided mindfulness session and time for social connection afterwards. Many people say this becomes the highlight of their week.

Have Questions?

How long do the sessions last?

Our service is open to anyone within 2 years of their cancer diagnosis, at any stage of their treatment or recovery. We welcome referrals from healthcare professionals and self-referrals from patients in Surrey, West Sussex, and Hampshire.

How many sessions can I have?

No. You can self-refer by completing our online referral form. However, if you are currently undergoing cancer treatment or have complex medical needs, we may contact your doctor to ensure exercise is safe for you.

I am seeing a counsellor outside of the Fountain Centre, can I see both?

We provide one-to-one exercise advice, small group exercise classes tailored for cancer patients, and access to specialist programmes and workshops for specific cancer types such as breast, prostate, and teenage & young adult cancer.

What can I talk about in the sessions?

Yes. All programmes are tailored to your individual needs, fitness level, and treatment stage. We work with you to set achievable goals and progress at a pace that feels safe.

How long do the sessions last?

Sessions are led by highly trained oncology physiotherapists and cancer exercise specialists with expertise in working safely with people affected by cancer.

Before starting, you’ll have an individual assessment. This includes a detailed health screening and simple functional fitness tests to ensure the programme is safe and effective for your needs.

Research shows that tailored exercise can reduce treatment side effects, improve energy levels, support mood, and help maintain physical strength during and after cancer treatment.

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and supportive footwear. Bring a bottle of water. If you have any equipment provided by your clinician (e.g., walking aids), please bring it with you.

The Fountain Centre is an independent charity and relies on donations to continue to offer this service.  You will be asked to donate but if donating is beyond your means, you may still attend.  We just need you to make us aware of your situation.
